David Burnett’s book A Practical Guide to ISO 15189 in Laboratory Medicine has been Highly Commended in the Basis of Medicine section of the 2014 BMA Medical Book Awards. The BMA review said:
“This book is an ideal introduction to the world of international standards and the idea of global standards for clinical (and other) laboratories. This is a very well-constructed and thought through analysis and description of the contents and development of ISO 15189 including some mild criticism of the standard. In addition, it includes an idealised implementation for an NHS Trust laboratory (St Elsewheres) and how the new ISO 15189 differs from and includes elements from previous standards. The implementation described is applicable to any laboratory anywhere in the world. The index is more than adequate for junior laboratory staff to read sections of interest to them. Senior staff needs to read the whole book as does anyone planning to set up any laboratory because even if it is not a clinical laboratory the examples of applications of principles apply very widely.”
