Westgard QC is proud to announce 2 new public workshops to be held this year:
Both workshops will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin.
For more than a decade, the Westgard Workshops have provided in-depth training that can't be found at other conferences. If you want to be more than an anonymous seat in a cavernous hall... If you want to learn whether or not the latest management fad has any real applications in laboratories... If you want honest assessments instead of equivocal statements... If you care more about practical tools than precious theory... You need to attend the Westgard Workshops.
More details on the workshops after the jump...
June 1, Madison, Wisconsin
The era of laboratory uncertainty is upon us: uncertain regulations, uncertain instrument performance, and uncertain resources. One way out of the darkness is a set of tools and techniques that can define and achieve world class performance, even as it reduces operating costs and resource consumption. Another path lies in compromised compliance, regulatory confusion, and continuous slash and burn budgeting.
- When managers need to optimise their QC operations for maximum safety and efficiency...
- When laboratories need to verify that the instruments they purchase will provide the quality their patients require...
- When hospitals and health systems need to select the best methods in the marketplace...
Six Sigma is the choice.
This one-day overview of Six Sigma will focus on defining tolerance limits and quality requirements, evaluating instrument performance with method decision charts, selecting efficient QC procedures with Sigma-metric assessment graphs and operating specification (OPSpecs) charts.

New guidelines from CLSI on Risk Analysis and Risk Management are coming this year. The ISO movement in the US is picking up speed, including the ISO standards for Risk Management for diagnostic manufacturers and medical laboratories. Yet amidst the sea of abbreviations and document numbers, there's little cohesion to this new quality management approach. For too many labs, though, Risk Management is a term without meaning, an approach without technique.
Dr. Westgard will give an overview of the Risk Management guidelines and the general approach, then provide specific adaptions, data-driven tools, and practical ways for implementation in medical laboratories.
Participants will review the principles of Risk Analysis, ISO (14971, 22367) standards and CLSI (EP18, EP23) guidelines, and the Joint Commission methodology for Proactive Risk Reduction. Further, participants will get hands-on experience using Risk tools, such as process mapping, fault tree analysis, and failure modes effect analysis (FMEA). Finally, participants will learn how to integrate Risk Analysis with their existing quality management systems.
Who should attend
These workshops are advanced training programs intended for laboratory directors, managers, supervisors, and quality specialists, manufacturer’s regulatory, quality, and compliance managers, as well as laboratory inspectors and consultants. Participants who are only interested in an introduction to Six Sigma Tools and Metrics may register for Day 1 (Six Sigma Tools and Metrics). Participants who have a strong background in Six Sigma may prefer to register for Days 2 and 3 (Risk Analysis Guidelines and QC Plans).
